BEHIND THE STORY OF BAIDYANATH TEMPLE: The history of this Jyotirlinga goes back to the Treta Yuga, at the time of Lord Rama. According to popular Hindu beliefs, the demon Ravana, king of Lanka, worshipped Shiva at this very site, where the temple is currently located; to get blessed with the boons that he later wanted to use to wreak havoc in the world. Interestingly, Ravana offered his ten heads one after the other, as a sacrifice to Lord Shiva. Pleased with this act, Shiva proceeded to descend to the Earth to cure Ravana, who was injured. Since Lord Shiva had acted as a doctor, he is referred to as 'Vaidhya', and it is from this aspect of Shiva that the temple derives its name. Architectural style The temple of Shiva was built by Vishwakarma, the architect of Gods. The temple is divided into three parts: the main temple, the middle part of this main temple, and the entrance to the temple. This 72 feet high temple is east facing and is shaped like a lotus. The top consists of three ascending shaped gold vessels that were donated by the Maharaja of Gidhaur, Raja Puran Singh Sanctum: Lord Shiva Date built: Treta Yuga Timings Darshan and Puja Morning: 4:00 AM to 3:30 PM Evening: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM The VIP Darshan timings is usually in early Morning at the time of Temple Opening. During Shravani Mela and various other occasions like Shivaratri, Somwari etc. the Darshan timings are usually extended. HOW TO REACH By Road Deoghar is directly connected by road to Kolkata (373 km), Patna (281 km), (Ranchi 250 km). By Rail Deoghar is connected to New Delhi Howrah Main Line via Jasidih (7 km). Jasidih is well connected to cities like New Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Raipur, and Bhopal via rail route. By Air Deoghar International Airport is presently under Construction. The nearest Airport is Patna from where you can take a Train Journey or hire a Taxi. A Taxi would cost you normally around Rs 3000 from Patna to Deoghar. SHRAVAN MELA The Baidyanath Temple is famous all across the world for its Shravan Mela that takes place in July and August.
