The Kollur Mookambika Temple is situated in Udupi District, Karnataka, and dedicated to Maa Durga or Maa Saraswati known as Mookambika Devi. Mookambika is Shakthi devi, the supreme mother goddess in Hinduism. She is worshipped in three different forms such as Maha Kali (Goddess of power) in the morning, Maha Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) in the noon and Maha Saraswati (Goddess of knowledge) in the evening. Legend Associated with the temple: At the Kollur Mookambika Temple, there lived a demon named Kaumasura, whose terror and powers were touturing the Gods every passing day. He had attained those special powers from Lord Shiva. While the gods were trying their best to stay away from him, good news came that the demon would face death. Learning of his impending doom, Kaumasura undertook severe penance. Lord Shiva appeared and asked the demon what boon he wanted. Knowing the fact that if his boon was granted the world would be at threat, Maa Saraswati took away his ability to speak. Kaumasura came to be known as Mookasura means the mute demon. Thereafter, Maa Durga killed the demon and hence she came to be known as Mookambika. The place where Mookambika killed the demon came to be known as Marana Katte. History & Significance of Mookambika Devi Temple There are many beliefs regarding the origin of the temple. It is believed that the shrine of Mookambika Devi was installed by Adi Shankara. He worshiped Goddess Saraswati intensely and his immense devotion made the goddess appeared before him. Maa Saraswati agreed to accompany him upon one condition that Adi Shankara would be leading the way and not turn back to check whether she is following him. If he looked back, the Goddess would stop there and will not move further. On the way, when Shankara could not feel the presence of Goddess Saraswati, he looked back and assured her presence. Goddess Saraswati stopped her journey and stayed at that place as per her promise. After repeated begging and pleading of Shankara, the Goddess agreed to be at the Chottanikkara Temple in the mornings and come back to Mookambika Devi Temple by noon.
